Coffee Filter

Privacy policy

Last updated November 2, 2026

This privacy policy explains what information Coffee Filter ("we", "us" or "our") collects when you use the Coffee Filter iPhone app or coffeefilter.app (together, the "Service"), how we use and share it, and the choices and rights you have.

The short version: we collect what we need to run the Service and to score coffee shops. We don't sell your information, we don't show ads, and other people using Coffee Filter can't see where you've been. By using the Service, you agree to this policy and to our terms of service.

Information we collect

Information you give us

  • Account information. You sign in with Apple, which shares your email address (or a private relay address) and, if you choose, your name.
  • Activity. Your check-ins and visits, the shops you favorite, the reasons you give for coming back, and your visit notes.
  • Submissions and messages. Shops and edits you submit, and anything you send us when you contact us.
  • Waitlist. Your email address, if you join the waitlist on coffeefilter.app.

Location

With your permission, the app uses your iPhone's location to show shops near you, give directions, and check you in. We store your location with your check-ins and with some other actions in the app, and use it to verify that check-ins are genuine. You can change or withdraw the permission at any time in iOS Settings.

Information collected automatically

  • Usage data: how you use the app, such as the screens you view and the features you use, which may include recordings of your sessions in the app.
  • Device and diagnostic data: such as your device type, operating system, app version, IP address, logs and crash reports.
  • Device check: to limit each iPhone to one account, we use Apple's DeviceCheck service, which doesn't give us an identifier for your device.

The app stores your settings, recent searches and an analytics identifier on your iPhone. We don't use advertising cookies or trackers.

How we use your information

  • To provide, maintain and secure the Service, and to run your account.
  • To score shops. Scores and other shop figures are calculated from many people's activity and shown only as totals that don't identify anyone.
  • To verify check-ins and prevent fraud and abuse.
  • To review the shops and edits you submit.
  • To respond to you and provide support.
  • To understand how the Service is used, fix problems, and improve it.
  • To send you updates you've asked for, such as waitlist emails.
  • To comply with the law and protect our rights and the rights of others.

How we share your information

We don't sell your personal information or share it for advertising. Other people using Coffee Filter can't see your profile, history or notes. We share information only:

  • With service providers who help us run the Service, such as Apple (sign-in and maps), and providers of hosting, analytics, crash reporting and email. They may use it only to provide their services to us.
  • With the maps app you choose when you tap Directions: Apple Maps or Google Maps receives the shop as your destination, under its own privacy policy.
  • For legal reasons, when we believe in good faith that the law requires it, or to protect the rights, property or safety of Coffee Filter, our users or others.
  • In a business transfer, such as a merger, acquisition or sale of assets.
  • With your consent.

How long we keep it

We keep your information for as long as your account is open, and afterwards only as long as we need it for the purposes in this policy, such as complying with the law, resolving disputes and enforcing our agreements. When you delete your account, we delete your account and activity, though copies may remain in backups and logs for a limited time. Shop scores and other totals that don't identify you may be kept.

Your choices

  • Export your data in the app: Settings → Privacy & Data → Export my data.
  • Delete your account in the app: Settings → Account → Delete account.
  • Analytics and crash reports can be turned off in Settings → Privacy & Data.
  • Location and notifications can be changed in iOS Settings.
  • Waitlist emails can be stopped with the unsubscribe link in any email.

Your privacy rights

Depending on where you live, including California, other U.S. states, the United Kingdom and the European Economic Area, you may have the right to access, correct, delete, or get a copy of your personal information, to object to or restrict how we use it, and to withdraw your consent. We don't sell personal information or share it for cross-context behavioral advertising, and we won't discriminate against you for exercising your rights.

To make a request, email support@coffeefilter.app. We may need to verify your identity before we respond. If you're in the UK or EEA, you can also complain to your local data protection authority.

International transfers

We're based in the United States, and your information may be processed there or in other countries where we or our service providers operate, whose data protection laws may differ from yours.

Security

We use reasonable measures to protect your information, but no method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we can't guarantee absolute security.

Children

Coffee Filter isn't meant for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has given us personal information, contact us and we'll delete it.

Other websites and services

The Service links to websites and services we don't control, such as shops' own websites. Their own privacy policies apply when you use them.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we'll post the new version here and update the date at the top.
